The White House disclosed the initiation of government employee layoffs on Friday, making good on earlier warnings linked to the ongoing US government shutdown, which is set to stretch into its third consecutive week.

Formal Statement and Early Information

The director of the White House budget office wrote on social media that “reductions in force have begun,” referring to the government’s procedure for letting employees go.

While Vought provided no details on which agencies were impacted, a treasury spokesperson stated that layoff warnings had been issued within that department. Furthermore, a DHS representative noted that staff reductions would also occur at the CISA. Also, a union for federal workers announced that members at the Education Department would be affected by the staff cuts.

Union Response and Court Actions

Labor representatives warned that the terminations would have “devastating effects” on services used by millions of Americans and pledged to challenge the actions in court.

This is shameful that the administration has used the government shutdown as an pretext to illegally fire thousands of workers who provide essential functions to communities nationwide,” stated Everett Kelley, who leads the AFGE.

Following multiple unsuccessful votes, the Senate’s Republican leaders have adjourned the Senate until next Tuesday, meaning the deadlock is unlikely to be resolved before then.

At a press conference, the GOP leader in the House, the speaker, blasted opposition lawmakers for not supporting the GOP bill, which passed in the House on a largely partisan basis.

“This is the last paycheck that 700,000 federal workers will see until Washington Democrats decide to fulfill their duties and reopen the government,” the speaker stated. “Starting next week, military personnel, who often live on tight budgets, are going to miss a full paycheck.”

Legal and Operational Constraints

Last week, unions sought a temporary restraining order to block the government from implementing any reductions in force during the funding gap. Moreover, a court official directed the administration to disclose details on layoff plans, impacted departments, and whether any federal employees had been recalled to carry out layoffs.

A report argued that a government shutdown limits the authority of the administration to carry out firings, citing official advice that acknowledged any long-term staff cuts need to have been started before the shutdown began.

Impact on Workers

The layoffs took place on the same day that federal workers got only a incomplete payment covering the final days of the previous month but excluding the beginning of October, since appropriations lapsed at the start of the month.

Max Stier, the president of the advocacy group, condemned the gridlock’s effect on federal employees.

This is unjust to make government staff suffer because our elected officials in the legislature and the administration have failed to keep our government running,” the advocate said. The air traffic controllers, veterans’ healthcare providers, wildland firefighters and safety officials are not responsible for this government shutdown.”

A notable point is that members of Congress and senior White House leaders are still receiving salaries amid the funding gap.
