Just 60 days in the past that Morgan Rogers stood on the pitch at Sunderland, appearing bewildered as his coach berated him over failing to anticipate a through-ball. During that period, as the club failed to win in six, the question was whether his performances were a sign or the reason for the team's broader struggles.

On Sunday, however, the touchline reaction proved to be far more favourable. After the in-form star swept in his second to reclaim his side's advantage, the boss tore off his coat, threw his arms wide and shouted in triumph. The Birmingham club continued to ten wins in a row , having failed to win their opening six games, are somehow just three points behind table-toppers Arsenal.

Is Aston Villa Serious Challengers?

It remains an exceptionally difficult proposition to answer. The historical record, the perceived status of the club, indicates otherwise. Additionally, they have not been wholly dominant during this run, even as the victories have stacked up.

As per statistical analysis, twice all season have Villa registered an expected goals figure significantly higher than the other team. For a team who have put together a ten-match winning streak, the Villans seem curiously susceptible – but right now the margins are falling their way.

The Rogers Recipe

The current approach seems to be to exchange chances with the opposition and then rely on their talisman to save the day with a couple of clinical strikes. It happened against Leeds, it occurred against West Ham, and once more when facing United.

The initial strike stemmed from a superb shot, bent just inside the upright from a wide position. The follow-up goal was essentially a slight scruffier version of the opener as he pounced on a pass from Watkins.

Can It Last?

Common sense dictates no. During the latest victory, the opponents registered more shots and more efforts on goal. The team has won each of their last eight by the narrowest of margins. The defence has been breached in all but one of those fixtures.

A statistical correction may well be the biggest rival the club will encounter as the season progresses. Rogers, in all likelihood, will not continue to thrashing the football into the top corner week in, week out.

A Case for Belief

Maybe there exists a different scenario in which, instead of outcomes regressing to match displays, the level of play rises to match the results. Vital cogs might still return to peak condition.

• The main striker could start adding to his goal tally.
• The attacking talent may rediscover the player he showed during his peak.
• The defensive duo are set to come back from the treatment room, fortifying an occasionally vulnerable defensive unit.

Maybe within that lies the potential of a title challenge, however, it is improbable can continue to depend solely on one man.

Enjoying the Ride

However, this is a surprise. It seemed improbable Aston Villa would occupy in the top three for the holidays. And certainly earlier this season, few could imagine Rogers as the year closed would be at the forefront of a title charge and appearing as a vital Three Lions star.

This winning streak should be enjoyed for the very reason that it seems so surreal. As the hero faced the Villa faithful at the final whistle orchestrating the applause, it was clear to be relishing every moment. A feeling he has rightly earned. These spells are uncommon in the sport and must be appreciated.
